When it comes to beauty tips for travel, Los Angles-based makeup artist Patrick Ta knows a thing or two. With a roster of globe-trotting celebrity clients — his massively popular Instagram feed regularly includes the likes (and looks) of Chrissy Teigen, Jennifer Lopez, Blake Lively, Gigi Hadid, the Kardashian-Jenner clan, and more — the 27-year-old has perfected the art of putting your best face forward, no matter where in the world you are.
We tapped Ta, who is also a spokesperson for La Mer, for some of his go-to beauty products for traveling — and for the scoop on what Chrissy Teigen, one of his longstanding clients, always brings with her when she flies.
On the beauty product Chrissy Teigen never boards a plane without:
“I know that Chrissy loves traveling with [the moisturizing cream] Crème de la Mer and La Mer Lip Balm, just because it really does the job nourishing and hydrating the skin, so everything looks nice and moisturized by the time you land.”
On what it’s really like working with Teigen:
“She’s always eating! So that’s so much fun, because we get to try so many new types of food — things that she’s trying out for her cookbook. She’s half Thai, and there’s this Thai dish that her and her mom cooked. I don’t know exactly what it’s called, but it has a lot of spices in it. It’s so yummy.”
On how to keep your makeup fresh on a plane:
“I would always carry a setting spray, your lipstick, and your concealer — have a little touch-up kit when you land, just because if you want to sleep or anything [in the air], it’s always important to be able to touch up with the few key products that make your look your look.
The setting spray helps give your skin luminosity and a natural, fresh look for when you walk off the airplane. I have two that I love Cover FX’s Illuminating Setting Spray — one or two spritzes does the trick — and the Mist by La Mer, which helps with redness and any inflammation.”
On his go-to drugstore beauty buys:
“Gigi [Hadid] has this Maybelline collection. It’s honestly seriously so amazing. The pigments are there. The color is there. The textures of the lipsticks are amazing. The textures of the lip liners are amazing. The mascara has a great eye-shaped wand.
Gigi just has really beautiful taste. I really love the products — and not just because it’s her and she’s my client.”
On a luxury beauty product that’s worth the splurge:
“I’d say the La Mer Concentrate and Tom Ford lipstick. The concentrate because I feel like it’s an all-in-one product: it helps with fine lines, it helps with redness, it helps with discoloration, and it locks in moisture. If you’re ever feeling like you just need a little pick-me-up the night before, you just apply this product and you wake up just looking like you’re feeling a little bit more beautiful. [I love the] Tom Ford lipstick just because I feel like the packaging is amazing, the formula is amazing, and the colors that I love are truly some of my favorite colors. I love Sable Smoke for a great nude and Flame for a great orangey-red.”
